Football before kick-off: 1X2, the Desert Warriors and AFCON 2027
Football is played between two teams of no more than eleven players each, and one player on each side must be the goalkeeper. Each half lasts 45 minutes, the two halves being equal in length, and the referee extends every half by the playing time lost during it, which is known as additional time.
Whoever scores more goals wins; level scores, a goalless game included, mean a draw. Where a competition's rules call for a winner, level matches may go to extra time, played as two periods of the same length that may not exceed a quarter of an hour each, to a penalty shoot-out held once the match is over, or to both.
1X2 and double chance, sign by sign
Three signs make up the 1X2 market: “1” backs the side named first in the fixture, “2” the side named second, and “X” a draw; on the site, the two wins are labelled “W1” and “W2”. Double chance pairs two of those outcomes in one selection: “1X” is the first-named side winning or drawing, “12” is either side winning, with the draw the only result left out, and “2X” is a draw or a second-named win.
The signs track the order in which the fixture is listed, not which club is at home, so look at the team listed first before you pick “W1” or “1X”.
The Desert Warriors after World Cup 2026
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, shared between Canada, Mexico and the United States, introduced the 48-team, 104-match format. Algeria's Desert Warriors got out of the group stage as a third-placed team after a 3-3 draw with Austria in their final group game, then lost 2-0 to Switzerland in the round of 32 in Vancouver.
Next comes the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying race, which spreads 48 national teams across 12 groups of four. Algeria were drawn in Group I with Zambia, Togo and Burundi, and matchdays 1 and 2 were played between 21 September and 6 October 2026. The dates still ahead:

Club competitions through to June 2027
In a league, a draw stands as the final result; both Champions Leagues, UEFA's and CAF's, move from a league or group phase into knockout rounds. These club competitions shape the 2026/27 season:
The league-phase fixtures of the UEFA Champions League put 36 clubs in a single table, each facing eight separate opponents, half of them at home. Clubs ranked 1 to 8 advance directly to the round of 16, and those ranked 9 to 24 drop into the knockout phase play-offs. After the last league-phase round on 27 January 2027, the road leads to a final in Madrid's Estadio Metropolitano, scheduled for Saturday 5 June 2027.
Six matchdays of CAF Champions League ties make up the group stage, contested by the 16 winners of the second preliminary round between 27-29 November 2026 and 22-24 January 2027. Quarter-finals are set for 26-28 February and 5-7 March 2027, semi-finals for 9-11 and 16-18 April 2027, and the final for a date between 9 and 31 May 2027.
English Premier League fixtures pit 20 clubs against each other home and away, 380 matches in all; a win is worth three points, a draw one and a defeat nothing, and the bottom three go down to the EFL Championship. The 2026/27 campaign opened on Friday 21 August 2026 and closes on Sunday 30 May 2027.
Pre-match and in-play: what changes after kick-off
