Beach Handball Explained: Sand Court Rules and Betting Markets
What beach handball actually is
Beach handball — searched just as often as *beach hand* or *sandball* — puts two teams of four against each other on sand: three outfield players plus a goalkeeper, all barefoot. The court runs roughly 27 metres by 12, with a 6-metre goal area guarding each net and goals measuring 3 by 2 metres.
Squads are far bigger than four. Players rotate constantly through flying substitutions, made without stopping play, because the attacking unit and the defending unit are usually different people entirely. Positions carry clear jobs: the pivot works tight to the goal-area line, the wing attacks from the flanks, the defender stays on court mainly during defensive phases, and the goalkeeper frequently joins the attack rather than staying home. One more figure completes the picture — the specialist, an attacker who wears a shirt of a different colour.
Two ten-minute sets and no draw
A match is not a single running clock. It splits into two sets of ten minutes with a short break between them, and each set is won on its own terms. A side can drop the opening set and still take the match.
Win both sets and the match is yours. Take one each and the outcome goes to a shootout: a player collects a pass from their own goalkeeper, runs with the ball and goes one-on-one for the finish. Inside a set, a level scoreline at the buzzer is impossible — a golden goal settles it on the spot. Neither the set nor the match can end tied, which is exactly why no 1X2 market exists here. Total playing time, break included, sits around 30 to 40 minutes.
Why some goals count double
A standard goal is worth 1 point. Five situations are worth 2: a shot released after a 360-degree spin in the air, a goal finished in flight from a team-mate's pass, the 6-metre throw, any goal scored by the goalkeeper, and every goal from the specialist.
That scale rewrites how a scoreboard reads. Totals and handicaps move in much larger steps than in indoor handball, and two or three spectacular finishes flip a set inside a minute. For anyone studying the game, the useful question is not only who scores but how they score — a squad built around spin shots and an attacking keeper produces a completely different points profile. Current pricing across upcoming tournaments sits in the pre-match odds section.
Tournaments and the strongest nations
The discipline is governed by the International Handball Federation (IHF) and is not an Olympic sport. The flagship event is the IHF Beach Handball World Championships, supported by the European Beach Handball Championship under the EHF, the African championship run by the CAHB, the Beach Handball Global Tour and the beach handball tournament at The World Games.
The calendar follows the weather: most international action falls between late spring and early autumn. Brazil, Spain, Croatia, Denmark and Hungary are the names that keep reappearing in the closing stages.
Across North Africa the picture deserves a straight answer. Indoor handball is a genuinely major sport in Algeria, and national federations do enter beach sides in the CAHB continental championship. Even so, the beach version stays a small niche there, well behind indoor handball and football. Anyone following the sport from Algeria is mostly watching South American and European squads compete for the medals.
Betting markets built around the format
Because sets are separate contests and goals carry different values, the market list looks unlike any other team sport. Here is what you will usually find and when each option earns its place.
Market | What you are backing | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
Match winner | The side that wins the tie | A clear gap in quality between the two teams |
Set winner | The team taking a specific set | Fast starters, or squads that fade physically |
Correct set score | 2-0 or 1-1 into a shootout | You expect either dominance or a genuine coin-flip |
Total points (over/under) | Combined points of both teams | Productive specialists on both benches |
Points handicap | Adjusted margin set before throw-off | A strong favourite priced too short outright |
Team total points | One team's scoring only | An attack known for its 2-point finishes |
Match decided by shootout | Yes or no | Two sides separated by very little |
Tournament winner | The eventual champion | An ante-post bet placed before the event |
Team to qualify from group | Progress out of the pool | An unbalanced group draw |
First set winner | The opening ten minutes | Teams famous for aggressive openings |
Form reading matters more than reputation here. Check how reliably the specialist delivers, since those goals count double; watch whether the goalkeeper joins attacks and finishes; measure the share of 2-point goals in recent outings; look up the shootout record, because one-on-one finishing is its own skill; and weigh stamina across two sets in deep sand, where running is brutal and teams often fade after the break. Home advantage is minor — nearly every event is a neutral-venue tournament compressed into a few days.
Pre-match versus live
Pre-match betting gives you room to work. You compare prices across an entire group stage, weigh squad depth and place longer-range bets such as tournament winner or group qualification well before throw-off.
Live betting rewards a different instinct. Each set is short and self-contained, so a burst of double-value goals from a specialist, or a keeper stepping up to score, swings prices within seconds. Losing the first set eliminates nobody: the second begins clean, and the odds reset hard at that moment. In-play matches are tracked from the live betting hub, and the mobile access page covers how to stay on a fast-moving set away from a desktop.
Getting started on beach handball
Three steps and you are set. Open an account through the player registration form, top it up in Algerian dinar (DZD) using one of the supported methods — BaridiMob, bank cards, e-wallets and USDT are among the most common choices — then find the sport inside the 2026 international calendar.
One practical suggestion: begin with match winner or set winner selections before moving to totals and handicaps. Those lines are deceptive precisely because a single strike can be worth two points, so a margin that looks comfortable rarely is. Returning players simply need to sign in to the account to review open bets and past stakes.

Beach handball: common questions
Can a beach handball match end in a draw?
It cannot. A tied set is decided by a golden goal, and a match split one set each goes to a shootout. That is the structural reason bookmakers list no 1X2 option for this sport, unlike indoor handball.
Why are some goals worth two points?
Five finishes are doubled: a shot after a 360-degree spin, an in-flight goal from a team-mate's pass, the 6-metre throw, a goal by the goalkeeper and any goal by the designated specialist. The rules reward spectacle, which pushes totals higher and widens handicap steps.
What happens if each team wins one set?
The match goes to a shootout. A player takes a pass from their own goalkeeper, runs with the ball and tries to finish one-on-one. It happens often enough that a dedicated yes/no market exists for exactly this scenario.
How many players are on the court at once?
Four per side: three outfield players and a goalkeeper. The full squad is considerably larger, since flying substitutions happen without stopping play and the attacking and defending groups are rarely the same players.
