England. FA Cup is England's national cup, run by The Football Association, and the oldest knockout competition in football, with a first final played in 1872. For 2026-27 the FA accepted 743 clubs. Six qualifying rounds feed the Competition Proper, where 92 exempt Premier League and EFL clubs join 32 qualifiers for eight rounds, from the First Round Proper to the final.
Staggered entry, one match per tie
The 24 National League clubs come in at the Fourth Round Qualifying, the 48 clubs of League One and League Two at the First Round Proper, and the 44 Premier League and Championship clubs wait for the Third Round in January. Since 2024-25 there have been no replays from the First Round Proper onwards, so each tie produces its winner on the day.
